Around the run of the 20th century, there was a streetcar that that started in Birmingham and transported visitors to South East Lake. Ending at East Lake Park, they would find boating on the lake, amusement park and luxury hotels. South East Lake was established as a resort community with housing (primarily for week-end visitors from Birmingham and faculty of Howard College which became Samford University).
